Annual Picnic - and a Safety Note

SMAC's annual picnic kicked off Sept 8th with surprisingly chilly weather.  Despite this, the food, flying and fellowship was good as always.

Unfortunately, we did have a crash in the cornfield which resulted in a small fire.  This was quickly extinguished by alert club members using available water and the field fire extinguisher.  This (plus the engine) is all that was left of a large Shock Cub:

The most important takeaway from this is that the fire risk is real.  Any model can catch fire after a crash under the right circumstances, and we all know the risks of overheating batteries while charging.

Rick S. generously provided replacement extinguishers.  One under the field charging box in the shelter house, the other is in the equipment barn.  There are also two buckets of sand in the shelter for smothering battery fires.

Especially if you are new to the field, take a moment to locate this safety equipment on your next visit.  You never know when you might need them.
