Building Season

Southwestern Ohio winter is 1/3 rain, 1/3 cold, and 1/3 anything else. It's a great time of the year for RC aircraft modelers to hunker down in their hobby rooms and work on projects. Whether it be building new kits, doing repairs, or refurbishing swap meet purchases, this is what we refer to as the building season.

Our very own Dr. Balsa has been carefully restoring a giant-scale Hanriot HD.1 biplane. The fabric covering needed replaced, and he's making great progress. He's using colored fabric for the replacement instead of painting it.

On the other side of town, David S. is making repairs to a big Hawker Typhoon model. A disagreement between the model and gravity led to a sudden removal of the landing gear retract. David completed the structural repairs and is now working on filling irregularities in the wood.

Swap meet purchases are similar to buying a used car. You never know the entire history of the model until you take it apart and start making upgrades. Rob C. is converting this swap meet Gee Bee model from nitromethane/alcohol power to electric. When the engine mount was removed he found that a previous owner had damaged the firewall. Instead of a bolt-on refit, it's a repair job.
