SMAC News

Autumn is here, and the weather is starting to do its inevitable turn to cold wind and wet. Several members from SMAC took advantage of the weather last weekend and attended a fly-in at Waco Field in Troy. Heather P. shared this photo of the flight line- her husband Todd's plane is on the far left and Alan M.'s tent is to his right; Chad N. and Rick B. were also in attendance.

The start of Autumn also marks the start of building season. "Building, you say? Hmph. Haven't done it, and doesn't that require a lot of skill and tools? A lot of time too! Bah!" Wait a minute. Building your own model can be one of the most rewarding experiences the hobby has to offer, and there are interesting model kits suitable for all skill levels. You don't need a workshop, or be a skilled artisan.

For example, check this out- a Golden Age aircraft, an Aeronca LB. It was spotted at the Springfield Barnstorming Carnival. Gosh- looks like it would take some serious craftsmanship to build that, right?

There's an entry-level kit of this plane! It comes with all the parts except the electronics- less than 100  bucks.

Cool looking foam models are costing upwards of $300...some even as high as $600. If you haven't built your own model, or haven't built one in a while, consider getting a kit to take up your spare time over the winter months. That foam D-18 Beech you have been hesitating to buy might be a great project to build!
