How to register with FAA

If you are an RC aircraft hobbyist and have not yet registered with the Federal Aviation Administration as required by the law, you can do so by following these simple steps. First, go to this web address and register as a Recreational Flyer:

FAA Drone Zone

Select the option for Recreational Flyers, NOT Part 107 (that's for commercial drone pilots). You'll be asked to supply your name and a few other bits of Information, including a $5.00 fee. Afterward, you'll be assigned a number that must be posted on the outside of all your models. There are SMAC club members and online services that can make nifty stickers for you.

Then, you'll need to complete an online exercise demonstrating that you understand the basic rules for operating your aircraft in accordance with the law. It's called the TRUST test, and can be found here:

TRUST Test

Once you have completed the test, you'll be awarded a completion certificate. You'll need to keep a copy with you when you fly- either as a printed copy in your flight box, or as a digital copy on your cell phone. If local law enforcement asks to see it, you are required to show it, just like a driver's license.

That's it! All there is to it. Complete those steps and you're in compliance with the law.
